Review - The Passionate Programmer

If you are looking for a motivation book, full of interesting insights and tips for planning a successful career this is a book for you.

Its a very lightly written book. You can read it in one go and you wont feel you are reading an IT book. Its more of a story and list of hints how to improve yourself and how to fit better in the modern IT market.

The only think i did not like too much was the impression that author is kind of 'blaming' offshore developers for taking American jobs. I'm not sure was it intended move to get American readers' attention or was it done by accident. Still i am not sure if its fully appropriate. Maybe i misunderstood the author. I'm really not sure.

As I see it its a free world. The more freedom on the jobs market the better for economy and businesses. If you are better or cheaper than others you fully deserve to get the job. Thats why I would not see offshore companies as a threat but as benefit.

I feel that western world often judges Indian teams as inferior in tech skills. Sometimes it might be true but from my experience its not always the case. They do have strong guys over there and its just the beginning. I guess people are intimidated that the bubble of 'better' west may burst. Time will come that they will not be rich just because they were born in particular country. They may have to rethink their aptitude and try harder to get what they want. We really take too much for granted in Europe.

Any way i got way off topic here. The book is very good and points out many important facts. Sometimes seems like tips are too obvious but i believe they will help you if you take them seriously.

I definitely recommend that book to all IT students, post grads and junior developers. I also think even more senior guys will benefit from reading it.

Final score: 9/10
