Degradation of PHP job titles Lately I see it on almost every CV we get. Everyone is a PHP consultant, Web Architect, Web UI Expert and god knows what!
In PHP world its quite obvious but not as annoying as in Java community. Almost every single Java candidate we get writes in his resume with terms like: Architect, Enterprise Consultant, Principal Architect, Solution Architect, Senior Enterprise Architect …. oh my god I want to shoot myself.
Then there is a list of JSR specifications or some other nonsense with every box checked as expert or whatever. You ask the guy in for a interview and he does not even know what is a compound index in the database. I mean come on. Why there are no Software Engineers any more?
Does everyone have to be a Consultant or Architect now?
Seriously the term PHP Consultant has degraded a lot or did my expectations got higher?
I would not call myself guru but if someone does I would expect him to know everything I know and then some more. In reality all these Senior Principal Enterprise Architects are regular developers and many of them really do not know what they are talking about.
Good time to be a PHP Architect
Well I guess its like any other job sector now, it has to sound cool and fancy as you wont get the respect and money you want. If you are a PHP Consultant it means you are a freelancer and companies wont hire you for permanent role. If you are an Senior Architect …. now we are talking!
Lucky to be a Senior Software Engineer
I really like to code and I love to make things happen. This is it. Every time we have evaluation periods or investigation sprints I am getting tired. It will not be easy to move up and leave development behind I am sure of it. I just like it too much.
